What to look for in a kitten:
Whatever your preference, pedigree or
non-pedigree, the kitten should be fit, healthy, happy and friendly.
The main difference between pedigree and non-pedigree cat is that you know
the parentage of pedigrees, to a certain extent, health and temperament
can be inherited; if you know who the mother and father are, and have met
them, you will have a fair idea of the character your kitten will have
when it grows up. All kittens should be used to the usual household
hubbub; the sounds of dishwashers, washing machines, vacuum cleaners and
televisions sets should not frighten them.
When buying a kitten that has been brought up outside a cattery, it
may take longer to settle into the environment of a normal home.
Here are some indications to health and
temperament you should look out for:
-
Kittens should be use to be handled
from birth, and should not be frightened of humans.
-
If the kitten hisses or spits at you,
or seems timid or nervous you need to teach them to trust you, hold
them and show them you will not hurt them, Give them lots of love..
-
The kitten should all have bright eyes
and clean coats with no sign of parasitic infestation.
-
Their tummies should feel plump but
soft; any hardness could indicate worm infestation.
-
The ears too, should be clean; any
brown, waxy deposits may mean the kitten has ear mites.
-
Look at the kitten's litter tray; is it
clean, too? A strong smell along with runny excrements could indicate
some infection.
